"The African war over homosexuality"
Philip Jenkins has an article in The New Republic on the "culture war over gay issues" being led by many of Africa's Christian leaders. I'm no expert on the subject, but I do come across homophobic outbursts pretty frequently. When I was in Kampala a few weeks ago, for example, the Monitor - Uganda's main independent newspaper - was running a feature asking people to write in about whether the rights of gays should be respected. In 20 or 30 responses over two days, only one person defended gay rights (and I seem to recall the name sounding kind of like a Westerner, though I could well be wrong there), most of the rest advocating locking them up, or just saying they're going to hell.
