Putin: Great president or greatest president?

The run-up to this election thing they're having in Russia on Sunday has been pretty fascinating. Technically it's a standard parliamentary election, but it's effectively a referendum on whether Putin is doing an amazing job as president, or just a really great one. The Guardian has a helpful Q &A on the subject, and the NY Times' Clifford Levy has an overview too.

In Slate, Anne Applebaum looks at Russia's disparate and generally ineffective political opposition. A crackdown on opposition protesters including Gary Kasparov has been getting a lot of attention - the AP, the NY Times, and the Wall Street Journal, have stories that aren't completely overlapping. The Nation's Katrina Vanden Heuvel laments the state of press freedom in Russia. And Luke Harding discusses Putin's hostile rhetoric towards U.S. interference in the Guardian.
